Coffee With Cream Is Boring

How do you take your coffee?–– Cream? Sugar? Cheese? These days, coffee lovers are getting more creative with their additives. From tonic water to olive oil, these are the strangest things people add to their morning brew.

1. Butter

"Bulletproof Coffee" became a health trend amongst celebrities who blend a heaping blob of butter into their coffee. Some folks claim it gives coffee an extra dose of energy that lasts longer and promotes weight loss. We beg to differ if this health fad is true but buttery coffee tastes delightful.

2. Black Pepper

Not a sugar fan? Maybe you'll like ground pepper! Black pepper is an odd spice to sprinkle in your coffee but some people think it's a delicious combo. Pepper adds a spicy kick and reduces the bitterness of a black coffee.

3. Eggs

Typically, people enjoy coffee on the side of their egg breakfast but that's not the case for everyone. Folks are cracking eggs into their cuppa Joe to add a frothy texture. Around the world, eggs are being added differently. Some people just whisk in a yolk while others blend coffee with an entire egg, shell and all.

4. Citrus & Bubbles

It's not uncommon in places like Puerto Rico to add citrus and carbonated water to coffee. Lime juice and bubbles adds a refreshing spritz and a touch of sweetness, softening the bitterness of the coffee. Lemon peel is another way people are flavoring their coffee.

5. Olive Oil

People are using olive oil everywhere they can these days. If you want more healthy fats in your diet, the trendy oil gives coffee more nutrition. The taste is surprisingly mild with a rich texture, similar to butter.

6. Mushrooms

Mushroom coffee is another health fad appearing at hipster cafes and organic markets. The fungi brew is said to give you the affects of regular coffee without the jitters. As you can imagine, the taste is more earthy and savory than an ordinary cup of coffee but it's mild.

7. Cheese

Cheese is just another form of milk so why not? It first become popular in Finland to plonk chunks of cheese into coffee, letting the pieces partially melt and soak up the liquid. After the last sip, a spoon is used to scoop up and eat what's left of the coffee-drenched cheese.

8. Salt

Salt is used to enhance flavor and balance flavor in many things. Sprinkling salt into coffee grounds is said to decrease the bitterness of a strong-flavored coffee. If you want to soften the taste without adding sugar, try a dash of sea salt instead.

9. Coconut Oil

Like other healthy fats and oils, coconut oil is a coffee additive following the health trend. It adds a rich and sweet flavor to coffee along with its nutritious benefits.

10. Tonic Water

Take your iced coffee up a notch with bubbles! Tonic water is being added to cold brew and iced coffees to add a refreshing and crisp flavor. It's the perfect thirst quencher on a summer day that'll put a spring in your step.

11. Protein Powder

Protein powder is usually added to smoothies but people seem to be adding the supplement to everything. You need to be a strong whisker to de-clump the powder in the hot coffee but some folks don't seem to mind it.

Chili and chocolate is a delicious combination so it makes sense that people would spice up their coffee too. Try a dash of your favorite hot sauce in your morning brew, it's sure to wake you up.

13. Fish Sauce

Fish sauce in coffee doesn't sound very appetizing but enough people have tried it to make it mentionable. Vietnamese coffee makers may have been the first to create the pairing, using the savory sauce to enhance the flavor in the roasting process.

14. Oatmeal

Coffee and oatmeal sounds like a quick breakfast on the go. Instead of water, folks are soaking their oats in a fresh cup of coffee. You can add honey and cinnamon to your caffeinated porridge or flavor it like you normally would.

15. Cardamom 

Cardamom is said to act as a neutralizer for the caffeine jitters and may settle your stomach. It's a common Middle Eastern spice that adds healthy benefits and a spicy flavor kick to a hot cup of coffee.

16. Peanut Butter

Who says peanut butter and jelly are the perfect match? Peanut butter lovers will go nuts over this additive. Melted peanut butter will make your coffee rich, creamy, and of course, nutty.

17. Sweetened Condensed Milk

Instead of adding cream and sugar to your coffee, you can skip a step with sweetened condensed milk. The canned milk is thick and sweet and will transform your coffee into a decadent dessert.

18. Cream Cheese

Cream cheese is definitely an odd thing to add to your coffee and you likely won't find it at your local cafe. Unlike hard cheese, it almost fully melts in the hot liquid, making it creamy. The next time you're slathering cream cheese on your bagel, try adding a spoonful into your coffee.

19. Orange Juice

Mimosas make sense but orange juice in coffee? Orange juice is usually served alongside your coffee, not inside it. Fans of chocolate oranges were likely the creators of this strange pairing. Citrus enhances flavor so try a dash of OJ in your coffee if you're up for it.

Marshmallows are favorable in hot chocolate so why not in coffee? Feel like a kid again by tossing marshmallows into your mug. The added dose of nostalgia makes your coffee sweet and frothy.
